Description

Hardback. The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of Matthew (chapters 5 - 7). Printed on folded leaves; pagination in red; colophon to final leaf in red "designed, written out and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski" "the whole reproduced by the Graphic Engraving Company". With beautiful colour illumination throughout in strong jewel colours and heavy gilt, as well as fine decorative tracery to illustration edges and spaces. Alberto Sangorski (1862–1932) was an accomplished calligrapher and illuminator. Decorated cream paper covered boards with printed in red to the upper board with decorative boards and repeated design of alpha and omega with flowers, circles, stars of David, Celtic knot work and IHS monogram, red titles to spine. Binding is slightly browned at the spine and edges, with a few minor marks, light rubbing to corners, shelf wear to the spine ends. Some faint marginal ink transfer and finger marks. Owner's name or similar obliterated in blue ink to the front end paper; partial faint browning to the end papers. Pages are slightly waved presumably because of the weight of ink in the decorated and illuminated design. With beautiful colour illumination throughout. Inner hinges are sound
