1880 West Indies MSS Journal

British West Indies, Venezuela, Newfoundland and Labrador, 24 January 1880 - 24 April 1883. Manuscript fair journal of a mariner attached to the Royal Marines Light Infantry [RMLI], Robert Cape, who was serving on HMS Fantome with the North American and West Indies Station, featuring several shipwrecks, an onboard arrest, a trial war battle at sea, and the transport of a suspected convict of a notable Irish politician. 8vo. 91 pages in manuscript, plus 1 pencil drawing. Vellum boards with blue ruled outline, original mauve and blue marbled endpapers, authorship inscription to front endpaper. An enviable seafaring commission to patrol the West Indies would enable this steadfast mariner to visit on numerous occasions the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad, Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Turks, Bermuda, Antigua, Saint Christopher [Saint Kitts], Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, and more.
