15th Century Manuscript Leaves. Single vellum leaf from an illuminated Book of Hours. Circa 1470's. With vividly coloured foliate sprays. Extensive us of liquid gold decoration. With 17 lines in liturgical hand. 6.5 inch x 4.5 inch. This is a leaf from the most fundamental book produced during the Middle Ages: The Book of Hours. Ever increasing opulent copies of these texts were produced for secular patrons. Gold was frequently used to catch the light as the reader turned the book in his hands and heighten the visual impact of the page. Also a leaf from a Breviary, prob. Italian. Two columns. Capitals in bright blue and red. A beautifully illuminated leaf from the French Book of Hours. Wonderfully delicate and ornate. Very desirable.
