China for the West: Chinese Porcelain & other Decorative Arts for Export, illustrated from the Mottahedeh Collection

Description

With a foreword by Nelson A. Rockefeller. Over the course of fifty years, Mr and Mrs Rafi Mottahedeh brought together a collection highly regarded for its range and depth. As Rockefeller notes in his Foreword: “That the story of Chinese export porcelain from the early sixteenth century could be told in terms of this single collection is some indication of its world stature.” In these two volumes, the student will find “plenty to stimulate thought” and, for the connoisseur, there is “more than enough to delight.” Over 300 objects are discussed and described, with black/white and colour illustrations. Part 1 deals with the principal porcelain styles; Part 2 with the influence of Europe and Western subjects of decoration on porcelain; Part 3 explores other arts for export, including reverse paintings on glass, painted fans and carvings in ivory, jade, soapstone and mother of pearl and metalwork. There is also a Bibliography and a comprehensive Index.
