9 volumes, set. First editions with the exception of Period II. Vol. I which is a second impression. Original quarter blue buckram with blue cloth boards, ruled and lettered in gilt. (The blue of the buckram used varies owing to the length of time between publications.) All edges gilt on most volumes. Six volumes with marbled endpapers, others plain. Illustrated throughout with black and white photography. Period II. Vol. I. has a stain to the fore edge, towards the front and the back, not affecting the text or photographs. Small ink ownership on fly. Periods I and II. Vol. II. has a large ink ownership on fly. Period V. Vol. I. has a very short tear to the leading edge of the title page. Both Georgian volumes have covers which appear to be smoke-blackened and an ink ‘Stock no.’ on the verso of the front endpaper. The smoke-blackening affects the edges of the preliminary pages of the last volume but does not extend beyond the Introduction. Most volumes have pushed corner tips and spine heads and some fading to the spine. First seven volumes near fine, last two volumes very good +.
