O'CASEY, Sean: The Silver Tassie: A Tragi-Comedy in Four Acts.

Description

First edition, 8vo, original cloth-backed paper covered boards, printed paper label to upper cover. With a portrait frontispiece of the author by Evan Walters. Inscribed on the front free end paper ‘To Joe Cummins with warm affection from Sean O’ Casey 11.6.28 London.’ Joseph Cummins worked as a surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin where O'Casey was treated for an ulcerated cornea when in his early twenties. Cummins took a personal interest in the young writer and the two remained friends afterwards. The Silver Tassie is a four-act Expressionist play about the First World War. It attacks imperialist wars and the suffering that they cause. O'Casey described the play as "A generous handful of stones, aimed indiscriminately, with the aim of breaking a few windows. I don't think it makes a good play, but it's a remarkable one." Very good, pages untrimmed, spine darkened, toning to endpapers and some wear to the extremities.
