Pan-Worship and Other Poems

FIRST IMPRESSION. 8vo. 130 x 200mm. Original grey cloth with gilt tiles to the spine and upper board, uncut edges, 80pp. There are two separate inscriptions by the author, one to her brother dated 1908 and then to Denys Blakelock, dated 1954. One of 500 copies printed. A little rubbing, shelf wear and light marks to the boards. Internally, there are two separate inscriptions by the author to the front free endpaper. The first is to one her brothers in the month of publication: 'To my dear Cola / from his loving sister Nellie. / December 1908.' She was known to the family as Nellie. The second is to her great long time friend, the actor (and her biographer) Denys Blakelock: 'And to my dear Denys in commemoration of the "Alcestis" in which he was Leader of the Chorus of Pherae (Third Programme) today July 4th 1954, from his loving Eleanor.' The Alcestis was indeed aired on the BBC Third Programme (later to become Radio 3) at 16:30 on July 4th 1954. The front pastedown bears the ownership signature of Deny Blakelock and there are biro notes at the top of the rear free endpaper. Otherwise, the pages are generally very clean with only the occasional light finger mark. This is Farjeon's first solo appearance in print, one published at her own expense – or more accurately, her mother's, and dedicated to her father. Having paid £37.17s.6d to the publisher, she received gratis one hundred of the five hundred copies printed. Of the remainder, fifty went to the press and 350 went on sale, from which Farjeon was to receive two-thirds of the price. A rare copy being signed to two very important people in her life.
