Swallows and Amazons

Description

First edition of the first title in the Swallows and Amazons sequence of novels. As is well documented Ransome based the family on the Altounyans, friends of T. E Lawrence .A very good copy of this sought after first edition. In green/blue cloth boards with gilt titling to front and spine, embossed publisher stamp to rear board. Some fading to cloth to top and base of spine matching the wear to original d/w. Internally bright, neat and clean and with sound binding. Colourful map endpapers, b/w line drawing frontispiece and title page drawn by Spurrier. Spurrier's style was disliked by Ransome and so a different artist was used for later editions. Small and very discreet original bookseller label (Coates & Bairstow, Huddersfield) to bottom inside corner of rear board. Previous owner's small signature to fep in pencil, otherwise unmarked. In colourful unclipped d/w (7s. 6d. net) that is slightly darkened. D/w shows map of Wild Island with Swallows and Amazons coat of arms. Shelf wear evident to edges with small closed tears running up spine edges from the bottom, approx 1inch. To top of the spine has a chip as evidenced in the photographs, not affecting text. Laid in is a signed illustrated hand-colour postcard to a young fan from Ransome in which he briefly discusses 'Peter Duck' and Titty's namesake, Mavis (Titty) Altounyan (later Guzelian). Overall a good, genuine copy that would be a great addition to any literary collection.
