First American Edition, and the first to be published in English, translated from the original Russian text by Nathan Haskell Dole. 8vo (8 x 5.5 ins) Preliminary blank present before the introduction. pp [ix], 6-773, [5] adverts at the end. Original brown cloth with gilt titles and circular device to front and spine. Spine slightly worn at head and tail, corner tips rubbed. Two leaves towards the end working loose. Occ. spots of foxing towards the end. Floral endpapers with bookplate of J.F. Schenck laid down on front pastedown. No old ownership signatures or other internal markings. An excellent copy of one of the high points of Russian literature, first published in book form in 1878.
