Memoirs of the Life and Travels of John Ledyards

Description

1828 Memoirs of the Life and travels of John Ledyard from His Journals and Correspondence. First English Edition. Lacking half title, armorial bookplate of Robert Eden to front pastedown. Contemporary aubergine calf, gilt, spine gilt in compartments, a little rubbed, Marble endpapers and marble to page ends. Gilt lines to boards. Tight and clean. The New Englander John Ledyard sailed as a marine on Cooks third voyage and published his Journal of Captain Cooks Last Voyage to the Pacific in 1783. This expedition accounts for a large proportion of the Memoirs, which then relate his meetings with Thomas Jefferson and Sir Joseph Banks, his travels in Siberia (hoping to cross the Bering Strait to reach Alaska, but arrested by the Russian authorities.. His personality was attractive, even to those who could give him no higher appraisal than that of the mad, romantic, dreaming Ledyard Ledyard accompanied Cook on his third voyage and would later travel to Siberia before dying in Cairo in 1789. Attractive copy. Scarce.
