Procreant Hymn

Description

First Edition. 1926. Limited issue, number 117 of 200 copies, of which 175 were for sale. Copper-engraved frontispiece and 4 plates by Eric Gill. Original cream buckram. Deckled-edged paper. Spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. Without dust wrapper. Octavo. Tight, clean and fresh copy. Procreant Hymn is first book illustrated by Eric Gill for the Golden Cockerel Press, to which he contributed five copper engravings: in order, these are titled "God Sending", "Earth Waiting", "Earth Inviting", "Dalliance", and "Earth Receiving", though their names are not printed in the book. The "explicit eroticism" of Gill's illustrations "shocked many of his former supporters and drew puzzled reproaches from the Dominicans" (ODNB). Gill 277; Franklin, pp. 329-30; Ransom, p. 296. Exceptionally clean and fresh boards and internally. Rare, near fine copy. Direct orders welcome.
