Description

HAIR POWDER TAX Stamp Office Certificate. Hair Powder Annual Duty, 1796. Thomas Kennedy Esq of Danure, residing in Dalqharron in the Parish of Daily [Dailly] and County of Ayr. For the Year 1796. 1796. Printed in red and manuscript, 150 x 205 mm. This item may have at some time been mounted and will bear traces on the reverse of adhesive or removal of mounts. Hair Stamp Duty was introduced in 1795 at the annual rate of 1 guinea [£1 1s] and abolished in 1869. Initially the tax was to pay for the war against France, raising £200,000 in its first year. It was partly responsible for the decline in use of hair powder; by 1869 the amount raised had fallen to £1,000.
